Dungeons of Daggorath
You might be saying to yourself, why are we looking back at a 34 year old game. We would then, most likely, look back at you with a discerning look, would then whisper to each other as if we were mocking you(we would be mocking you), possibly spitting at the ground, then looking back at you thinking that may have been an over-reactive response. And for that, we do apologise. Mainly because if you didn’t know about this game then you don’t know how much thanks you need to give it. As without it, a lot of games and genres would not exist. And it’s set in dungeons!
We are of course talking about Dungeons of Daggorath that first appeared of the TRS-80 COCO or Color Computer, produced by DynaMicro. Dungeons of Daggorath encompasses a real time, first person, responsive role-playing into a video game, and one of the first games to portray 3 dimensions in a real time environment. It has great vector like graphics and some audio samples for the creatures, and all this on a, wait for it, 8k rom cartridge. And remember, this was 1982!
The tension this game builds from the very beginning, and to the very end. We have not finished this game YET as it doesn’t let you make mistakes in later levels. The enemies you face range from Spiders, to snakes, rock monsters, blobs, knights, scorpions, wraiths and a few others. Each as terrifying as the next, and it doesn’t help that the sound each make when walking scare the bejesus out of you. It isn’t a great moment when your heart is pounding like crazy, you have just recovered from fainting and you hear a metallic clang or a short hiss in the distance.
Many objects litter the land, some items useless, other items magical and there are a couple of items that can end your life instantly. The key to defeating the wizard is to collect some magical rings, but you need to figure out the riddle of the ring to make them magical. In the case of the Gold ring, after searching the internet you would find the answer, but they didn’t have this back in 1982. Research of the reading kind would have taken place. After you have incanted this ring with fire, you can use this ring and 2 others to destroy the wizard.
Also your fighting and armour varieties. You start of with a wooden sword and can up grade through the ranks. When you get your first iron sword, you feel invincible!! (You aren’t) Also special torches that light up secret passages, and later on, only certain torches light up certain enemies. Like the F*%&ing scorpion that kills you in one go. Stupid F#($ing scorpion.
If you like the look of this game, give it a go. You will not be disappointed.
Find it too hard, have a look on youtube for some walkthroughs as the game does get very interesting and you would not expect what happens near the end of the game.
